CANADA: Getting Answers on Traceability
If you have questions about traceability or premises identification, the Traceability in Alberta team, which consists of representatives from Alberta Agriculture, Livestock Identification Services and the Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, will be out and about at a number of industry events. Katherine Altman, manager of extension and education with the traceability division with Alberta Agriculture, discusses the program.

CANADA: Government of Canada Helps Raise Western Canada's Agricultural Profile Abroad
Western Canadian farmers will benefit from increased sales and enhanced competitiveness in overseas markets thanks to an investment from the Government of Canada. The funding includes $410,000 under the Livestock Auction Traceability Initiative in support of 20 traceability initiatives to help Western Canada's livestock sector become more competitive in international markets by enhancing our ability to support animal health emergency management, food safety and market access.

CANADA: Agri-Traçabilité Québec: From Farm to Table, Or Almost
Agri-Traceability Quebec (ATQ), which this year celebrates its tenth anniversary, is a pioneer in his field, not only in Canada but also around the world. To market its expertise in software and know-how, this non-profit organization, established by the Quebec government and agricultural producers, created a subsidiary, which itself has designs on the lucrative global market. Last May, a first agreement was reached with the Chilean government to ATQ makes a diagnosis of its traceability system.

CANADA: Cattle Producers Rebounding Eight Years After BSE Crisis
After the BSE crisis devastated the Canadian cattle industry in 2003, producers say eight years later, they are finally starting to see a turnaround. “This fall will be the first profitable time that some producers have seen for a long time,” Jack Hextall, Chairperson of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association said. Now that things are starting to turn around, Brad Welter from Pound-Maker Agventures says he can see a silver lining from BSE; including improvements to the way cattle areis traced. “It has brought the industry together; it has moved ahead our traceability,” Welter said.

PAKISTAN: Traceable Pakistan Site Launched
An official website ‘Traceable Pakistan’ of Punjab government regarding participation of Punjab, in International Green Week (IGW) has been formally launched. The purpose of this website is to build image of Punjab-Pakistan and it has been linked with all social networks like Facebook, Twitter and others to introduce Pakistan as an emerging country of traceable agricultural and livestock products.

AUSTRALIA: NLIS, Room for Improvement
A recent producer demonstration site (PDS) is pointing to ways that the National Livestock Identification System can be used to improve production efficiency before livestock step off the property. While NLIS data provides traceability and confidence in the safety and integrity of Australian red meat, many producers are using it to streamline their data collection and management.

CANADA: OnTrace launches animated video
OnTrace has debuted a new animated video "OVN: From Farm Gate to Dinner Plate(R)" to promote and provide an informal introduction to the OnTrace Verified Network. "Interest in the OnTrace Verified Network has grown steadily since we launched last spring," said Brian Sterling, CEO, OnTrace. "With the video our objective is to spread the word and communicate the OVN's many traceability benefits simply, quickly and informally with a little humor.”

ITALY: Italy and Philippines consider debt swap deal to fund traceability
The Philippines has entered into discussions with Italy in a bid to secure funding for a food traceability scheme that will ensure its produce is saleable in Europe and the US. The money would be used to fund software that can be used to assure the supply chain and consumers in export markets of the bio-safety of Filipino produce.
